Shopper Unaware If Inflation Out Of Control Or Single Zupan’s Potato Always $150

The United States is currently experiencing inflation increase at the fastest rate in forty years. Rent and gas prices continue to rise as corporations take advantage of global issues to drive costs up. Consumers are absorbing the hit to their pocketbook as household budgets are stretched due to the rising cost of necessities. ⁣

When Hillside resident Simi Demarco headed into the Burnside Zupan’s, they were struck by how much inflation had impacted grocery prices. Or had it? “I couldn’t believe how much Covid, supply chain issues, and the invasion of Ukraine has affected the price of a simple potato. $150 seems pretty steep, even due to all the contributing circumstances,” Demarco remarked. “Come to think of it, while it does seem high, I feel like Zupan’s may have always charged this much per spud.” ⁣

Determined to get to the bottom of the situation, Demarco headed to the dairy section where an 8oz container of mozzarella cost $115. In the bakery section a baguette to pair with the cheese was $90. A tin of artisan sardines was $740. “I just can’t quite pinpoint whether it’s the inflation or the Zupan’s,” they said. “Is this fig jam supposed to be $1499, or is there a period missing?“⁣

Confounded, Demarco checked out with their items. One second mortgage on their home later, they headed to gas up at the Burnside Chevron to do the dance all over again.
