PPB Announces Bold New Plan To Hire Officers That Live In Portland By End Of 2023
The Portland Police Bureau is looking to add new officers to their sworn force. Police chief Chuck Lovell announced Tuesday that the bureau is actively working on targeted recruitment that strongly focuses on geographical factors.
“We’re doing great in some areas, less so in others,” admitted Lovell. “We have metrics we’re trying to hit and have set ambitious goals. Of our 789 current rank and file officers, we have exceeded our quota from some areas, while we’ve fallen short in others. We have 200-ish public servants on the force living in Battle Ground, WA, hundreds more from Vancouver and a few dozen call Camas their home. In addition, we’re proud of the work we’ve done beefing up our contingent right here in Oregon. We boast a robust 50 officers from a combination of Gresham, Sherwood, Wilsonville and Clackamas.“
When asked if he thought it would be helpful if some officers lived in the city they policed, Lowell was defiant. “I don’t think it makes a difference if our officers drive 45 minutes to work in a community whose population they consider as ‘other.’ But just in case, we have formed a capable task force that is moving swiftly to balloon the contingent of Portland residents we employ to at least one, and to as many as four. Our goal is to have this completed by the end of 2023. Is it aggressive? Yes. But here at PPB we are known for taking bold reactionary action.“
The Portland Police Bureau encourages all interested parties to reach out to them through the employment portal on their website. No experience is required.
