Zupan’s Discounts Bananas To $650 Each For Customers Who Lose SNAP Benefits
42 million Americans will lose access to monthly nutrition assistance in November if the government remains shut down. The Trump administration chose not to use money earmarked for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in case of emergencies and shortfalls to pay recipients. This will lead to one in eight people in the United States losing their SNAP benefits, with families predicted to be unable to buy food in a matter of days. With the popular program, also known as “food stamps” set to run out, local businesses have been doing their part to keep their communities nourished.
Zupan’s is planning to heavily mark down a number of typical grocery items for all Oregonians impacted by the loss of SNAP benefits for the duration of the government shutdown. This includes $650 for a banana, King Salmon at $259/lb, cans of San Marzano tomatoes for $400 and Cosmic Crisp apples for just $999.99.
“We are disgusted by the greed of this government,” declared Zupans CEO Mike Zupan.“Food should be accessible to all.. Those who are needy, come on in. Those who are hungry, come nourish yourselves with our bounty. If your family relies on federal food assistance, we encourage you to enjoy bottom of the barrel prices at our family of markets. If you’ve lost your benefits, take advantage of our special deals – no questions asked.”
“In spite of a government that is trying to punish us, our community must come together and support each other during this time of need,” claimed Zupan. “Democrats and Republicans should work to urge the Agriculture Department to use the emergency funds they already have earmarked. In the meantime we are preparing to run even more specials for our EBT customers on items such as natural wine, dungeness crab and beluga caviar.”
