 OMSI Submarine Deployed To Persian Gulf Amid Rising Tensions With Iran

USS Blueback, the iconic submarine docked at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry for the past 26 years, has been called into service by the US Navy. The 63-year-old diesel electric submarine had been placed on prepare-to-deploy orders and Saturday morning shipped off to the Persian Gulf to enforce American Navy outposts in the region. ⁣

Its ragtag crew is made up entirely of OMSI staff and the fourth grade class from SE Portland’s Sunnyside School who happened to be participating in OMSI’s famous “Submarine Overnight” sleepover field trip program.⁣

66-year-old ship captain and retired biology professor Regina Maguire told The Scallion via Skype, “Our staff generally teaches students about buoyancy and density. You know, how submarines dive and surface. That said, I guess it’s time to teach these kids how to operate the torpedos.”⁣
