Following Success Of Arts Tax, Portland Implements Additional $35 Crafts Tax
As the weather warms, the days stretch longer and the cherry blossoms begin to bloom, Portland welcomes one of its favorite spring traditions. The Arts Tax has been an institution of the city since 2013 and residents simply cannot get enough.
“While other taxes are coy, hiding behind funny names and percentages that only my accountant can see, the Arts Tax feels more personal,” said Montavilla resident Jasmine Santino. “I love sending $35, completely separate from my other taxes, to help kids do theater production, sculptural ceramics, murals, or whatever ‘The Arts’ is supporting these days.“
As word trickled back to the Portland Revenue Department that the tax was so beloved, they got to work. Soon, the Crafts Tax came to fruition – an additional $35 to help teach Portland Public Schools students crafts ranging from popsicle stick architecture and oragami to furniture building and steel forging.
“The people spoke, and the city listened,” continued an elated Santino upon hearing the news. “This new Crafts Tax is going to take the city by storm and I can’t wait to send in my additional $35 dollars.”
