City Unveils New Pickleball Facility To Combat Houselessness

The City of Portland, in partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation, unveiled a sprawling new outdoor recreational complex which aims to provide relief for many of the City’s unhoused residents.⁣

“I could not be more proud of the way we listened to the concerns of the community and delivered on their behalf. This dedicated pickleball facility will be just what our unhoused friends and neighbors need,” said Portland city commissioner, Rene Gonzalez. ⁣

The sprawling new facility, located in the Irvington neighborhood, contains seven mixed-use pickleball courts, an “influencer wall” painted with angel wings, a labradoodles only dog park, a stage for a summer concert series and a single public restroom. Those wanting to use the courts will have to provide their own equipment. ⁣

“It seems like the overarching issue with homelessness is the lack of housing, but if the big dogs in city hall say this is a better idea, I trust them,” said Irvington resident Mindy Ranes. “That’s why we elect them – they’re smarter than us. I would think that providing food and services would be more important than the part of the pickleball court called ‘the kitchen,’ but what do I know? Happy to have some more spots for people to play paddle sports in the neighborhood even if I am not eligible to use them myself.” ⁣
