City Announces Everyone Can Drive Their Car Over Tilikum Crossing One Time, As A Treat

Tilikum Crossing, a cable-stayed bridge across the Willamette River, has been designated exclusively for pedestrians, cyclists, TriMet buses and the MAX Orange Line light rail since its construction in 2015. Beginning Thursday, Portland residents will be allowed one trip each over the bridge in their car of choice.⁣

“I am aware that this is highly unusual, but what can I say – Portlanders crushed it this year,” said president of TriMet public relations Cassidy Wagner. “Drivers will have to register through our online portal at http://trimet.org and will be given a specific window of time during the month of August to make their journey across the river.”⁣

The bridge will remain open for normal pedestrian, bike and transit traffic, causing alarm in some who frequent Tilikum Crossing. Wagner seems unfazed. “Sometimes people use rented electric scooters in the bike lane, which is kind of a gray area when it comes to protocols on the bridge. As an added bonus for being really good this year, during the entire month of August, car drivers will be allowed to knock into one scooter each as the cherry on top of their Tilikum treat.”
