Cop Worried That Defunding Police Could Lead To Drastic Spike In Public Safety
As protests continue to gain momentum in the wake of the assassination of George Floyd, an increasingly loud rallying cry nationwide is demanding defunding of the police.
On its face, the concept can evoke images of total anarchy. Without the comforting knowledge that a person with a badge and a gun is only a 9-1-1 call away, what is to stop dangerous criminals from breaking the law?
In reality, defunding the police entails a reallocation of funds towards a variety of programs better suited to answer many of the calls officers currently take. It would result in a professional trained in a specific field – addiction therapy, community mediation, crisis intervention – arriving on the scene. This new approach is so novel in America that it takes a degree of imagination to buy into, and not everyone has bought in.
“The police plays a vital role in our communities,” insisted Portland Police Deputy Sergeant Anton Zink. “I can’t think of a situation that doesn’t require an armed man or woman with multiple months of training. I tremble at the thought of what would come of society if unarmed specialists intervened before situations even had a chance to escalate. We could see catastrophic increases in public safety!“
