Super Bowl Champion Andy Reid Makes Triumphant Return To Walrus Exhibit At Oregon Coast Aquarium
What a week for walruses. First whiskered warmonger John Bolton commanded headlines for days as the world wondered whether he would blubber before the U.S. Senate. Now Oregon Coast Aquarium’s beloved Andy Reid, on loan with the Kansas City Chiefs, has returned to his habitat a Super Bowl champion. Aquarium staff surprised the 61-year-old pacific walrus by dumping a Gatorade bucket filled with fish over him when he arrived in Newport.
“Most walruses in exhibits have trainers,” explained aquarium curator Kelly Sowers. “Not Andy. He was always different. Ever since he was a pup, he’d teach all of the aquarium’s otters and seals tricks. It was no surprise that he was recruited by the NFL to coach. He’s a natural.“
“This win is not just for the Chiefs, but for all marine mammals – especially those in Oregon,” said Reid’s human translator in a press conference Monday Morning. “Seals, sea lions, otters and, yes, walruses all along the coast have been basking not just in the winter sun, but in the glory of their hometown hero delivering a triumphant victory – over a team from California, no less.“
Next Saturday, Oregonians are invited to attend a Super Bowl victory parade sponsored by Mo’s Seafood and Chowder. The parade will start at Seal Rock and make its way up the coast through Newport to Otter Rock. Reid will be leading the parade with the Lombardi trophy.
